Weltformat 2026

all formats

go to lucerne

A few more days to go — this Saturday, October 3rd, Weltformat kicks off its next (and already 18th!) edition!

We're opening all exhibitions and the festival center at Kornschütte right on time at 12pm. At 1pm, a guided tour through all exhibitions starts for anyone who wants to join, and at 6pm the opening night takes place at Kornschütte. We can't wait to start this new festival edition with you. :)

«new formats»

– and what's "new" anyway?

Formats give orientation and boundaries in design. They define size, materiality, scope of action, and processes. And yet they can also be changed and questioned. This is exactly what we're focusing on during this festival edition: What happens when designers try out new possibilities? What could a "new" format look like?

five

exhibitions

Fitting the theme, the exhibition «new» formats takes place at Kunsthalle. Curated by the festival team and complemented by an open call to the Weltformat Community – what does "new" mean to you? – it brings together over 50 works by Swiss and international designers: from a book produced entirely on a 3D printer, to a perforated poster, to knitted type.

Both 100 Best Posters and Best Book Design from all over the World are back in Lucerne. You'll find them at Kornschütte and Ahoi.

The Tour de Suisse exhibition returns for its second round, showing bachelor's theses from Swiss design schools – an insight into current themes and working methods of a young generation of designers.

Flags with a Message examines a classic format of political communication: students from Mainz University use 20 typographic statements to draw attention to (queer) feminism in graphic design through flags.

talks, design check-in

and exchange

Alongside the exhibitions, an extensive supporting program awaits you: Design Talks, Design Check-ins, Show & Tell and the Graphic Design Fair. This is how Weltformat creates spaces for knowledge exchange, discussion, and connection – between established positions, students, and a young generation of designers.

A highlight: Polish designer Anna Wacławek comes to Lucerne in collaboration with Polish Graphic Design, leads a workshop on landscape as a starting point for graphic design, and shares her perspective on "new" in the Design Talk «There is no new format under the sun».
